About

University Florist in downtown Chapel Hill has been a family-owned, continually operated  business since 1946. Collectively, Pop and I have put six decades of love into our dream.

Pop graduated with a business degree from UNC-Chapel Hill. After completing his patriotic duty with the U.S. Army, he married my mother and bought University Florist. Then he became a father. First came my sister…then me. I’ve been sweeping floors at the shop since I could hold a broom. (I’ve become a very good sweeper!)

Despite my proficiency with a broom and the long afternoons spent in the shop, I didn’t intend to enter the “family business.” I was going to be a drummer in a rock and roll band. However, after graduating from Appalachian State University with a degree in Radio Broadcasting, I moved back to my hometown and started following Pop around in earnest, ready to put my artistic nature to work in a different capacity. Active in the local community, Pop knows everyone. Walking down the street with him can take forever as locals and transplants alike reach out to shake his hand. I’m proud to walk by his side.

Every day the staff and I have the fortunate opportunity to exercise our imaginations. We drink coffee. We listen to heavy metal. We are amazed by nature. Each arrangement we create carries an emotion. We observe and interpret through flowers.

My father and I were born and raised in Chapel Hill. We love our community and we love what we do.

He is Charles House. I am Henry House. This is the House we built.
